Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Follow official guidance from the National Hurricane Center preparedness and your county emergency management office.
Before the season
- Have dead fronds, coconuts and dead branches removed
- Ask a qualified tree specialist about any leaning, cracked or declining tree
- Clear drains, swales and gutters' discharge areas
- Check irrigation, controller and rain sensor
- Note where pots, furniture and decor will be stored
- Agree who handles storm cleanup while you're away
After a storm
- Stay clear of downed lines and call the utility
- Photograph damage for insurance before cleanup
- Don't climb trees or use chainsaws on storm-damaged trees
- Request a cleanup visit; response depends on safety and access
No trimming or landscaping prevents storm damage. Trees of concern should be assessed by a qualified arborist.
