Trim less than you think
UF/IFAS guidance warns against over-pruning palms. Green fronds feed the palm, so removing them can slow growth and weaken it. Dead fronds, flower and fruit stalks, and coconuts over walkways are reasonable to remove. See UF/IFAS Extension publications.
Timing
Trimming is commonly scheduled around flowering and fruiting, and before storm season to remove dead fronds and fruit. The right timing depends on the species, its health and your HOA's standards.
Safe scope
- Ground and ladder-reach work: a trained landscaping crew
- Tall palms and trees: a crew with the right equipment and insurance
- Anything near power lines: the utility or a line-clearance qualified company
- Disease, decline or risk questions: an ISA Certified Arborist
- Removals and crane work: a tree-removal company
Avoid climbing spikes on palms; they leave permanent wounds. Ask any company how they reach the crown.
